Basil: cultivation and care

The plant is not whimsical, but the cornflower prefers growing and care in partial shade – in the sun, the color of the inflorescences by the middle of summer, especially in hot, dry weather, turns pale, and yellow undertones appear. In the warm season, it needs abundant watering – with a lack of moisture, the smell of flowers disappears and the flowering period is significantly reduced. The culture is frost-resistant, tolerates frosts in open ground without shelter up to -15°C.

The flower is not picky about the soil, but it develops better and blooms more abundantly in fertile, deeply cultivated and nutrient-rich soil.

All care for the basil consists in timely watering, removing weeds and periodically loosening the soil. Tall varieties (above 1-1.2 m tall) need pruning after the flowering period.

In early spring, it is recommended to feed the plant 1-2 times with fertilizers for blooming garden flowers.

The flower propagates by seeds, cuttings and dividing the bush.

Seeds are sown in open ground in late autumn, before the onset of frost. Seedlings are unpretentious, develop rapidly and bloom already in the 2nd year.

Cuttings are taken in early spring from young shoots with incompletely developed leaves and rooted in open ground. Bushes are divided at the end of April or at the beginning of September and planted at a distance of at least 40 cm from each other.

In dry weather, it is often infested with aphids.

The plant is perfect for decorating herbaceous and shrub borders, planting in large arrays and as solitary plants.
